Just saw this movie last week, and I was wondering what others' impressions were of it. I liked it at first, but as the days went on and I thought more about the movie I started to dislike it rather intensely.
There's a subplot involving two gay men who move into a Latin neighborhood and use one of their tenants as a sex toy. Things start to get complicated. I liked this. I liked that the movie questionned gay yuppie values. I thought that was brave.
My problem is, that subplot raised interesting issues and then completely ran from them. I'm torn on whether to give the producers credit or not. And - without giving away too much - the subplots involving the Latino families were simplistic to the point of being embarassing.
Has anyonone else seen this yet?

Fri, September 29, 2006 - 3:15 PMTo me film wasn't about the gay characters. They were apart of it yes
but not the main story. I think the story was more about shifting from
the ways of the past into new. In my mind the young girls supposed
imaculate conception was a metaphor for this. The neighborhood was changing..
elders passing on...the young wanting to shed the old ways and embrace the new.
To me the gay subplot was just another way of expressing this change. The scene
where the camera showed new businesses going up next to old ones was a more
obvious metaphor. I really liked this film !
