Re: Top 10 Favorite GLBT themed movies
Wed, May 5, 2004 - 1:39 PMOK, I can't quite list 10 faves, but I did adore The Crying Game. I was fortunate enough to have seen a pre-release screening of it, so was totally unaware of its 'secret,' although I guessed it pretty fast!!
I'd love to read everyone's recommendations. -

Sun, May 16, 2004 - 3:00 PMOh Albie darlin, thanks for posting :-)
I see one fo your runner ups is "Urbania". Wow! That movie disturbed, yet fascinated me deeply. Of course the subject content (GLBT hate crimes) always do, but the imagery in it still haunts me. -

Re: Top 10 Favorite GLBT themed movies
Sun, May 16, 2004 - 3:01 PMAlso, have you seen "The Trip"? I REALLY enojed this movie, though it gets very mixed reviews. -
-
Re: Top 10 Favorite GLBT themed movies
Sun, May 16, 2004 - 3:10 PMI really liked "The Trip" (it should be on my runner-ups, as well as "The Crying Game").
"Urbania" is a very tough movie to watch. I found watching it a second time made me appreciate the non-linear story. As for the hate crime theme--like "Boys Don't Cry"--it is an emotional experience beyond cinema. I think the movies that leave a bit of themselves in your head or heart are the best kind.
As a pure love story, I don't think a film could "get it" better than "Beautiful Thing". I think it is a timeless classic and should be required watching.
Another film I left off was "Love And Human Remains", which is difficult to watch.
A film that should have made my top ten is "Karakter". It's a Dutch film (subtitled) directed my Mike von Diem. It is simply breathtaking, disturbing and unforgettable.
(I 'talk' way too much.) -

I couldn't agree with you more! Having lived in England for a year, allowed me to appreciate the Linguistic Idioms the Brits use. Absolutely timeless..

I'm waiting for a new Film called Yossi & Jagger to makes its way up on my Netflix Queue. From everything I've read, this movie from Isreal is amazing! Looking forward to it and will post what I thought about it afterwards.

Re: Top 10 Favorite GLBT themed movies
Sun, May 23, 2004 - 2:37 AMMy faves:
The Angelic Conversation (Dame Judi Dench's readings of Shakespeare's sonnets to the music of Coil are sad, but beautiful)
The Doom Generation (Araki)
Nowhere (Araki)
Hustler White
Bound (Gina and Jennifer are simply hot!)
Frisk (creepy film, but with Parker Posey, you can't go wrong)
Mulholland Drive (Naomi Watts!!! Need I say more?)
My personal preference is for more obscure, experimental film in general. Seeing everyone else's lists makes me realize that I do need to see more GLBT-themed films. -
-
Re: Top 10 Favorite GLBT themed movies
Sun, May 23, 2004 - 7:46 AMOh I forget all of Greg Araki's films:

Sat, June 5, 2004 - 2:21 PMAhhh yes! A fellow "Camp" fan. I loved this movie. Ok the acting wasn't the greatest, but the Music was GREAT!!! I'm listening to the soundtrack as I type this. This movie was a nice satisfying nibble to my Musical Theatre addiction.
Great list Larry! -
-
Re: Top 10 Favorite GLBT themed movies
Sat, June 5, 2004 - 5:13 PMDefinitely an awesome list Larry. I agree about "Camp", as well Steven. I'm a sucker for musical theatre.
"Far From Heaven" is a visually stunning film. Julianne Moore has fast become one of my favorite actors. Todd Haynes is brilliant and his homage to the great Douglas Sirk is a feast for the eyes. I think there are a lot of simple, understated performances that reel you in (eg. Dennis Haysbert, Viola Davis).
Not to get off the subject of the thread, but several have metioned the films of Gregg Araki. I was wondering what people thought of "The Living End"? I recently bought the DVD and found it as jarring and uncomfortable as the first time I watched it. -

one that i've not seen on a list here (sorry if i just missed it) that i loved was an australian film called 'head on'. did anyone see this? it was about this angry greek-australian guy who has a tough time with identity and sex. it was really raw. cool film.

Re: Top 10 Favorite GLBT themed movies
Tue, August 24, 2004 - 3:01 PMI need to rent more movies. I thought The Talented Mr. Ripley gave the heterosexual audience a bad idea of homosexuals though. They, just like I, went into the movie not even knowing he was going to be gay, and I heard many comments going out that made me think the movie confirmed the public's misconception that gay = bad person. Make the main character a criminal, a killer, pretty damn twisted, and yeah gay...just didn't set too well for me. Sorry for those who liked it, I just detested hearing so many people with their bigotry "confirmed". -

Re: Top 10 Favorite GLBT themed movies
Tue, August 24, 2004 - 3:09 PMI totally agree with you amber, and I had sort of eluded to this in another thread. I *do not* support movies that paints a negative picture of a homosexual of ANY gender. It, IMO, is still another way of discrimination against all GLBT individuals. Are there some GLBT people that are bad? YES! Just as there are "bad" heterosexuals. For MANY years, and even still, we are portrayed as Criminals, Sexual Deviants, Social Deviants, Mental Deviants etc. Time to show on a consistant basis that WE are just as WONDERFUL as the next person! -

Re: Top 10 Favorite GLBT themed movies
Wed, August 25, 2004 - 4:32 PMIf they had focused more on the social ridicule and how that can cause someone to snap, no matter whether the victim is gay or straight or whatever, then that might have brought more light to the situation.
Even in newspaper articles about a gay person killing another, they stress (though they think it's not to make the killing look like it's BECAUSE the people were gay) the whole Gay issue/connection/whatever to the point that it looks like "yep gay perverts killing again...typical of the path society is heading down. And they want to give these perverts more rights? Gay people obviously have other perversions and are just all around perverted/demon possessed/[add appropriate other negative stereotypes here]"
I remember one article in particular about one boy killing another boy (they were both about 14) and they really beat into the ground the gay connection. The article never came out and said "they did this because they were gay and they have problems", no, they didn't do that. But they said enough to lead the public to that or a similar conclusion.
One boy, after having intercourse with the other boy, brought him to the garage, I think, and bashed his head in until he died. He did this because he 'didn't want to be gay' or something like that and that he had been fighting it but when he'd be with this boy he couldn't resist the 'temptation'. He quoted in trial "we did what homosexuals do and then I ...." and the rest goes from there. Never was there a statement in there about the negative images about themselves that gay teens are constantly bombarded with. Nothing. Never did it once even allude to the fact that an intolerant and stereotypical society that infuses negative images into children about gay people (this is including gay children who grow up thinking they can't be gay cause that's some foreign, horrible, perverted, and just really downright bad thing, and when they are faced with those feelings down the line, many can't handle the pressure and don't want to admit it themselves) and how those negative images lead them to suicide, self-hatred, and all sorts of other self-destructive behavior NOT because they themselves are gay, but because they've grown up in a society and most likely a family that taught them from day one that gay people were evil, perverted, child-molesting creatures, and the very thought that they are this evil thing they heard so many things about drives them to negative behaviors that are a result of their own self-hatred due to the negative images they've been sold about themselves..
But them I'm rambling again. Forvive me. :-P -

Re: Top 10 Favorite GLBT themed movies
Thu, August 26, 2004 - 12:09 AMi liked Elephant myself and i dont think the two boys are gay at all. They kiss in the shower cuz neither one of them has ever kissed anyone before not cuz they are gay. Thelma nd louis are not gay and when they kiss before they drive over the dge at the end we know it was a kiss of deeper love and friendship not about them being gay. I thought Elephant was perfect in how it refused to give answers or even adress any issue but instead presented just how normal and everyday something so violent usually is. The media like to sensationalize it and make it gay or this or that but in reality violence and terror are usualy mundane and boring and that is really whats scary and troublesome. Most of the horrible deeds done to people are done in the most matter of fact way without much reason or logic behind them. If everything humans did was planned and logical we would be vulcans and not people :)
not trying to rant but thats my two cents -

Gus van said himself the two boys are not gay. the kiss is meant to symbolize how innocent they actually are which makes the act of violence even more resonant.

Re: Top 10 Favorite GLBT themed movies
Thu, August 26, 2004 - 12:33 AMActually, Gus had said in an interview in Entertainment Weekly before the movie was released that the one of the sub plots of the movie was that of 2 homosexual Male high schoolers. He also went on to say the reason it wasn't a chunkier part of the movie was cuz he felt it took away from the over all message of the movie, ala Columbine. Not exact quote, as it was a while back i read it. -

Re: Top 10 Favorite GLBT themed movies
Thu, August 26, 2004 - 1:04 AMon charlie rose him and diane keaton who produced the film talked about it and what i said above is what he said. Its not a gay kiss becuase the two boys do not know if they are gay. They have never even kissed a girl before so its something deeper and its about a final goodbye to each other more than anything else.
Honestly thats what he said. Check out Charlie Rose transcripts i would not make it up :)
But ya know this makes me think of the deeper issue of gays in media and television and i think there is something very important we often forget to think about.
By trying to sanitze our image to the public we make things worse than they are. Now im not saying its fair that over the years alot of vilians and sisys have been gay in movies cuz we are not all like that at all. I am saying though that to deny someone else thier artistic freedom cuz it might make us look bad is a very bad idea. I think hitler had the same idea about how he wanted people to see germans. Only show the good side. Personaly i like many gritty movies as is evidenced by my top ten list that dont have the best image of gays in them. I don't think they make anyone hate gay people who don't already.
Look at the black community and its stuggles to get positive images on tv. The problem is it really does not work very well. The more you portray an image of yourself the less real you become to people. I don't know about you but im not a broadway show or an item up for sale at macys. I don't need to even think about my image in that way ya know? The only way we will ever get people to know we are not monsters is by our actions in everyday life with them.
One more point and i will stop. I really hate that gay and lesbians want the world to see them just like straights. I like who i am and i like alot of the rebelious aspects of being gay. I think the more we try to shame our community into behaving the less respect we have for ourselves and the less respect the world has for us.

Re: Top 10 Favorite GLBT themed movies
Thu, August 26, 2004 - 9:07 AMTrue, but...I have to say that I loved The Talented Mr. Ripley. AND The Silence of the Lambs, another oft-protested-by-the-gays movie.
I'm bad, I know. -

Silence of the Lambs???? OHHHHH, now mid-post I get it. The guy who was killing all those girls was making a woman suit. Hmmm...never thought about that. It gives a bad image to transexuals (if that's the right word, sorry for my ignorance in that department) which isn't right either, but I suppose that the 'average' viewer would just see him as 'gay' and not know anything more and then blame all gays in general.
But I liked that movie because Jodie Foster *swoon* was in it. Forgive me. Lol. ;)

Re: Top 10 Favorite GLBT themed movies
Thu, September 9, 2004 - 10:37 AMI just watched "Billy Elliot" for the first time last night and LOVED it! It's not really a GLBT "themed" movie, but there's a cute little gay boy in there. Heck, if I was his age I'm sure I would've fallen for Billy, too! :) -

Re: Top 10 Favorite GLBT themed movies
Sun, September 12, 2004 - 3:12 PMI rented "Latter Days" today and I gotta say - I loved it! I spent a good portion of my teen years as a mormon (thanks to my dad's VERY mormon and VERY large family). This movie is about a missionary coming to terms with his sexuality. Nicely done and eerily accurate of mormon attitudes.
And it actually made me cry at the end. Not many movies actually move me that greatly. -

Re: Top 10 Favorite GLBT themed movies
Tue, November 15, 2005 - 8:49 AMI'm new to this tribe... By and large, I'm not too crazy about the state of GLBT cinema and literature, but here goes:
1. Urbania (with a better editor, it would have been SO much better, but even so the performances and script were excellent)
2. Lilies (one of the best, most beautiful films of any genre I've ever seen)
3. Yossi and Jagger
4. Beautiful Thing
5. Go Fish (probably the first gay film I saw that gave me hope for gay cinema)
6. Latter Days **
7. Mulholland Drive
8. Chasing Amy
** My husband is LDS (Mormon). He related to most of the film for obvious reasons, but thought one segment was so disrespectful that, overall, he hated it. That one part was something that would only be noticed if you're LDS, though, and no non-LDS friends I know were even aware of it. -

Re: Top 10 Favorite GLBT themed movies
Mon, November 21, 2005 - 4:42 PMOne reason I joined this tribe is to find some new titles to rent in the LGBTQI them and so many of the ones I have rented I have not liked at all... Thank you all for the lists. I will go watch some of the ones I have not yet seen.
I have always been scared to watch Maurice because it is one of my all time favorite books and I was worried that a movie might muck it up, but I think I will go give it a try (Mercant Ivory [sp?] did a good job on A Room with a View so they might have with Maurice too).
I liked Gia because it was so well acted.
High Art was good and for the most part one of the better gay themed movies I have seen except the sex scene feels wrong every time I see it. Never once have I watched a movie in which the gay or lesbian love secenes feel authentic. I know love scenes are difficult to do, but it seems like they are particularly worse in LGBT movies. It has always puzzled me. The day I find a truely hot love scene in a LGBTIQ movie I will be very happy.
There was a movie I watched on television one time and it was in Spanish with English subtitles, about an older man and his young kept lover with whom he was really in love, and then the young man was shot by another yong man who soon became the lover of the older guy... I don't know the name of the movie and have never seen it again but it was really good. The best chemistry I have seen between actors for a while, and it didn't seem to be overacted (although I don't know Spanish well enough to say for sure). It was set somewhere in central america I think. It was really good.
I wish I knew the name of that film.

Re: Top 10 Favorite GLBT themed movies
Tue, January 23, 2007 - 6:54 PMI don't think there's anything new here but... In no particular order:
01 It's My Party
02 The Hanging Garden
03 Lillies
04 Le Fate Ignoranti (a.k.a. His Secret Life)
05 Fire (The Deepa Mehta film)
06 Before Night Falls
07 Walking on Water (gay side-theme, but excellent story)
08 The Wedding Banquet
09 Mambo Italiano
10 Though not strictly gay, I will have to list Billy Elliot, which was definitely gay friendly - Also in that category is The Full Monty, which does have a good gay sideline.
I'm also a fan of most of Pedro Almodovar's films, which usually have some gay content.
And many many more.
