Sorry if this topic has been discussed to death. I looked for hreads on it and found none. So, I watched the first series, the British version, and hated it. The main charater is so unappealing and narcissistic and self-serving and everyone seems to pander to him and desire him. Unfortunately, I'm not sure this is not too far from the truth in gay culture, but its not a pretty picture and it is not a very affirming view of the possiblities of gay maturity. Are we to be perpetually portrayed as lusty boys that refuse to grow up? I would rather be one of the lesbians in the series who live in this sort of tribe. They were the only appealing characters in this show.

Fri, February 9, 2007 - 10:05 AMYeah, i watched the UK version a few years ago, and found it totally unappealing(other than the theme song, which i think is kind of catchy). I've never seen the US version, so I've no basis for comparison. I much prefer Metrosexuality, which is really all over the map, and to a degree reflects what I want my queer community/family/tribe to look like. -

Fri, February 9, 2007 - 10:30 AMI saw the UK version many years ago at a film festival, I agree not appealing as for the Americna version it was sort of like watching friends, no people of color in Pittsburgh? Most of the times you saw black men was if there was a group sex scene...there were a few cameos here and there but to be honest besides the coupling of Michael and the Robert Gant character (who's name I forget) and Sharon Gless wasn't much for me to watch with the show...

Actually the main character in the US version is Michael, who puppy-dog shadows the narcissistic ho.
But that's an otherwise dead-on description of what goes on in the US version. The ho also is a statutory rapist . That doesn't seem to bother too many people. It was never responsibly addressed. The Sharon Gless caricature came close once. The only person who says what no one else will say is painted rabidly homophobic because -- for some inexplicable reason -- he has a problem with a grown-ass man fuckin' his underage son.
