Red and I live in a small city of around 50K in West Virginia, so when we want to see 99.9% of gay cinema we usually have to wait and buy it when it comes out on dvd. I'd read several reviews of Mysterious Skin the past several months and finally ordered it. We watched it last night.
I must first say that Brokeback Mountain is playing at our local cineplex and we have seen it. For so many reasons, I feel that it deserves every single laurel it is receiving this year (and then some). But let me say here...this film, Mysterious Skin...HOLY CRAP!
I can not remember the last time that I felt so affected by a film. These characters and this plot are absolutely riveting, disturbing, and touching. I was completely moved by the performances.
And while I am certain that most of us are sick of such negative 'Debbie Downer' gay-themed films. There were so many poignant moments in this one that deal with some very real (albeit ugly) realities.
The scene where Neil is tricking with the AIDS guy...what powerful stuff!
It is a shame that Joseph Gordon-Levitt has been so unjustly overlooked. His performance was amazing.
If you haven't seen this film, get it in your Netflix queue or order it from amazon.com! It's well worth it!

Fri, February 10, 2006 - 11:20 AMCarl, I have to warn you...this film deals with some pretty graphic description of child molestation. It is not a 'feel good' film.
But it is certainly one of the most powerful films I've ever seen. Gregg Araki has done a stupendous job.

Fri, February 10, 2006 - 11:46 AMI concur with your review ... although difficult to watch because of the issues at hand, I personally found myself engaged in the movie so much that I didn't freak out or have an otherwise emotional response to some of the creepier aspects of the various story lines.
Joseph Gordon Levitt roxx my soxx!! He's always been such a cutie! -

Fri, February 10, 2006 - 12:20 PMi loved mysterious skin but I only like brokeback. mysterious skin is a far more complex movie than brokeback probably one of the many reasons it would never get the attention it deserves. -

Re: absolutely astonishing
Fri, February 10, 2006 - 12:42 PMI hear ya turtle, but to me Brokeback is amazing because of its simplicity, not despite its complexity.
It is so much harder to tell a story with the unspoken word, yet the physical nuances of Brokeback do indeed tell a mighty powerful tale. Heath and Jake's body language in that film was painful for me to watch. I could sense their longing as well as their anguish.
Hard to deny the power of that! -

Mon, March 6, 2006 - 7:21 AMI agree. I saw this movie at Sundance last year - was so moved that when it came back later, I took one of my best friends (straight, no less) to the film. He thought it was powerful too. He kept forgetting the name of the film (and I'm not sure he remembers it to this day), but he was pretty shaken by the experience. It's a great film!
