This may be a bit obscure, But Target had one of these "Old TV shows for a dollar bins" and I got one of a British TV program from the probably from the 50's called the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (with an adorable Sherlock). Anyway, it clearly has a gay subtext with very little stretch of the imaginiation. Sherlock and Dr. Watson are clearly domestic partners. One episode shows them in their bathrobes in the morning (I guess the Brits refer to these as smoking jackets). On a wall that is frequestly the backdrop for the scene are erotice drawings of wrestlters with their naked bums emphasized. Does anyone remember this series? I would love to know if its true. The fascinating thing about the 50's, 60's and 70's is there were loads of family in the industry and they were making their presence known in artful ways.
Another example: I sued to be a big fan of "Man from Uncle" as a child probably because of the latent homoerotic connection between Solo and Ilya. Think about it - they were always pursued by attractive women but never let them "in" in fact acted almost scared of females and not at all vulnerable to their temptations - why? Because they were completely satisfied with eath other. One episode really confirms this: The two were sent on assignment somewhere and were checking into their single hotel room. Solo: "I'll get us our room" Later we see the room - it clearly has only one single bed which Ilya is found lounging seductively upon. Even as a kid I madly in love with Ilya. Do any of you remember that series?

Re: Sherlock Homo and Man from Auntie
Fri, March 17, 2006 - 3:37 PMI was just talking about this on another tribe last week. The 70s were FULL of gay-subtext shows.
Man from Atlantis - Patrick Duffy walking around in speedos nearly the entire episode, every episode. Yum!
He-Man - A well-dressed prince living a respectable princely life, except for his deep, dark secret he can't share with anyone. You see, when the mood strikes him, he changes into a muscle bound man wearing a loincloth, leather haltertop, and matching cross-hatched leather boots.
The Smurfs - 99 males and 1 female? I'm willing to bet there weren't many smurfs without fantasies about Papa Smurf.
Johnny Quest - Really? A family of two male life-partners, their son, and their man servant. Where was Johnny's mother?
And of course, Wonder Woman. An entire island of strong, assertive women with not a man in sight. Not only a dream life for many lesbians, but she gave a sense of empowerment to all gaykind. -

Re: Sherlock Homo and Man from Auntie
Sun, March 19, 2006 - 4:13 PMHe-Man ... sooooo gay! just really *listen* to the lyrics of the theme song!!! "fabulous secret powers were revealed to me the day i held aloft my magic sword" ... it doesn't get any gayer than that, mary!! :)
although it would be hard to track down, i was lucky to have viewed one of the "missing presumed wiped" episodes of "The Adventures of Adam Adamant" (yes, the inspiration for '80s sensation and 21st C lunatic Adam Ant) and he, like the boys of The Man From Uncle, positively *squirm* when a woman presses her advances upon him ... very queer, indeed!
